New Mexico Dahlia Society

The NMDS is a local chapter of the American Dahlia Society (ADS) formed in 2006. Our purpose is to promote interest
in dahlia culture within New Mexico and to provide beneficial information regarding the growing, care, and showing of the dahlia.

The dahlia is native to Mexico and Central America, where it was originally cultivated by the Aztecs for its tubers, which were used as food. It was later introduced to Europe in the late 18th century by Spanish explorers. In 2026 Dahlias are cultivated across the globe in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Today there are approximately 49 species of dahlia, along with thousands of cultivars and hybrids, resulting in a vast array of varieties. These flowers come in many colors, shapes, and sizes, making them popular among gardeners.
